Perry Holmes is a self-taught artist from Winnipeg, MB. His work reflects his Métis heritage and personal journey. His mother, his first art teacher, instilled in him a deep appreciation for detail and storytelling. She also imparted a profound respect for both nature and people. Art runs in his family, and Perry proudly carries on this generational tradition.
After years of working as a Data Technician, Perry transitioned to a full-time art career. He has dedicated over a decade primarily to portraiture. His ability to capture the essence of his subjects makes his work deeply personal and evocative. Alongside commissioned portraits, he has developed a diverse portfolio across various mediums. He continually expands his artistic range through client collaborations.
Despite his wide artistic scope, Perry finds his greatest joy in painting nature. He explores its infinite diversity whenever he has spare time. Passionate about sharing his craft, he enjoys teaching and mentoring artists at all stages of their creative journeys.
A Life Transformed
The Moment That Changed Everything
One cold January morning, while hauling tools to my work truck, I was struck by the sight and sound of four or five blue jays singing in the branches overhead. At that moment, I contemplated a drastic change—leaving the security of full-time employment for a life of creativity and pursuit of excellence.
No matter where I worked across Canada, my eyes drifted to the window, watching wildlife like a prisoner longing for freedom. That morning, seeing the bright feathers and lively faces of those birds resonated deeply. To this day, the blue jay holds a special place in my heart. It was a wake-up call to pursue a more fulfilling life as an artist.

Connecting to My Métis Heritage
I believe my Métis heritage influenced me long before I even realized it. As a child, I was drawn to the outdoors. The beauty of changing seasons captivated me—the sparkle of fresh snow and the fierce winds of winter. Canoeing, birdwatching, and spending time in nature with family and friends shaped my artistic perspective.
Our love for animals also played a significant role in my creative journey. Since childhood, I’ve shared cultural conversations with friends about how our ancestors lived before modern conveniences eased survival hardships. This connection to history and nature continuously finds its way into my work.
Artistic Inspirations and Influences
Throughout my journey, many artists have influenced me. These inspirations began with my mother and the teachers who encouraged me in my early years. Of course, Bob Ross and his magic were significant inspirations, as was Canada’s own Robert Bateman, who mastered wildlife painting.
Locally, artists like Lesia Anna have taught me about the spiritual significance of animals and the power of bold colors. Joyce Schmidt has demonstrated how art can improve people's lives throughout the city. These, along with countless others, have shaped the artist I am today.

Workshop Focus: Sharing My Passion
Teaching Art with Fun and Freedom
In my workshops, I emphasize the importance of play—eliminating self-judgment and diving into the creative process without fear. Brushstrokes happen naturally, and they improve over time. Whether working in oil, acrylic, or watercolor, I encourage participants to embrace the joy of creating. The goal is to foster a sense of freedom, fun, and artistic discovery. At the end of each session, people leave with not only a new piece of art but also new memories.
Capturing the Essence of a Subject
Helping participants create meaningful art begins with listening. I encourage people to express their thoughts, hesitations, and questions as we work together to bring their visions to life. Sharing personal stories and experiences enriches the process, adding depth and authenticity to each piece.
A Memorable Workshop Experience
One of my most memorable workshops was for a friend’s birthday celebration. Initially, many participants were nervous about doing something “wrong” (which, in art, you really can’t). But as the fear melted away, laughter took over, and they began to enjoy the process. By the end, everyone was proud of what they had created, taking home their artwork as a keepsake of a joyful experience.
Connecting with the Audience
Who Can Benefit from My Workshops?
Art workshops offer a much-needed escape from the stress of everyday life. In today’s fast-paced world, it's crucial to take a break from screens, spend time in nature, and engage in creative expression.
Parents and children can bond through art. Seniors can enjoy a therapeutic creative outlet, and anyone facing life’s challenges can use art as a coping mechanism. Many attendees even leave with new friendships, which is a lovely bonus.
Creating an Inclusive Artistic Space
I strive to make my workshops welcoming and accessible to everyone, regardless of experience or background. I simplify the process, making creativity feel natural and achievable. I also offer easy “cheat” techniques to help those who find drawing intimidating.
Cultural heritage is another significant aspect—I encourage participants to explore their backgrounds and express their identities through art. By doing so, we create an enriching environment that celebrates diversity.
Overcoming Hesitation
If you're hesitant about exploring your artistic side, my advice is simple: just try it and see! Art is personal, and there is no right or wrong way to create. What’s essential is expressing yourself and enjoying the process.
A Unique Perspective: Bridging Different Worlds
From Data to Art
My previous career as a Data Technician surprisingly intersects with my artistic practice in several areas. Many of my former coworkers have become clients, and some have even attended my workshops.
Technology also plays a crucial role in my work. I rely on computers for research, marketing, and connecting with my audience. My past job instilled in me the discipline needed to navigate the ups and downs of being a full-time artist.
Celebrating Métis Culture in My Art
The Métis community continues to inspire me every day. My friendships and family ties shape my worldview, and I find great fulfillment in researching and painting people, places, and events connected to our history.
I believe honesty and humor are vital elements of Métis culture. I try to bring those aspects into my workshops to create a rich, engaging environment.
Fun Highlights: Celebrities and Art
Painting Influential Figures
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to paint several well-known figures. The experiences have been unforgettable.
Wes Studi – When I showed him a painting I made, he shared it with his fans during the isolating days of COVID-19. He told me my artwork brought comfort to people, which meant the world to me.
Rutger Hauer – I created a portrait for him to auction for his charity work. He loved it but joked around and swore like an army sergeant—his sense of humor still makes me laugh!
Keanu Reeves – The nicest guy in Hollywood. We chatted about movies and life when he saw my charcoal drawing of him as John Wick. He was incredibly kind to my friend Phoebe, who arranged the meeting.
Samuel L. Jackson – Meeting him at The Forks, thanks to my mentors Lesia Anna and Joyce Schmidt, was unforgettable. He was funny, slick, and thoughtful—plus, the meeting happened on my birthday!
Final Thoughts: Following Your Passion
Art has been a transformative journey for me, and I love sharing that experience with others. Whether you’re picking up a paintbrush for the first time or looking to refine your skills, I invite you to join me in the joy of creativity.
And remember—sometimes, all it takes is a blue jay to remind you that it's time to follow your passion.
